About Michael

Professor Michael Sankey

Professor Michael Sankey is the Director, Learning Futures and Lead Education Architect at Charles Darwin University. He is also the Recent Past President of the Australasian Council on Open, Distance and eLearning. He specialises in the areas of elearning pedagogies, multimodal design, authentic assessment, visual and multiliteracies and his recent research has focused on, the advent of generative artificial intelligence, learning and teaching quality and enhancement systems, the multiple representation of concepts when utilising multimedia technologies and Web 2.0 environments, and how the use of blended learning can enhance student learning opportunities, particularly for those studying at a distance. Michael has been working in Higher Education for over 30+ years and is an active member and Community Fellow of the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ASCILITE), the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) and is a life member of the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA).

Short Career Profile

I am a highly experienced leader, coach and mentor in the field of technology enhanced learning in higher education, with a particular expertise in people management and leadership development. My strength areas include: transforming and innovating learning and teaching experiences for both staff and students; facilitating sector-wide engagement; strategic project management; higher education research and consultancy. Over my time in higher education, working initially as a professional staff member, then transitioning to an academic position, I have gained a significant appreciation for the breadth of experience required to meet the challenges of contemporary university life. With a strong background in Instructional Design and Academic Development, I have trained hundreds of staff in how best to design and deliver quality education and discipline-based courses. I have lead sector-wide training events in the areas of leadership development and quality assurance through benchmarking for close to a decade, and have a strong focus and passion on raising-up new leaders in how best to harness technology to enhance learning and teaching, both here in Australia and in the developing world.
